Event Description

Author Vivian Nicholson-Mueller will discuss her research into the life and works of William Sidney Mount, internationally renowned 19th century genre painter from Setauket. From farmers to dancers, Mount’s paintings reveal a seldom recognized world on the North Shore of Long Island. At a time when racist caricatures were the norm, Mount portrayed people of color in his mid-nineteenth-century works with great humanity. Nicholson-Mueller will bring to light the real-life people Mount captured in his paintings.
