Spaces for Kids & Teens

Children's Department

The Children’s Department is a vibrant space for our youngest visitors and their caregivers. At the north end of the room you will find our Early Childhood Area, which is surrounded by a whimsical mural full of favorite book characters and literary quotes. Families are encouraged to spend time in this area, where we have comfortable seating for parents and caregivers as well as a variety of educational toys to help young children learn through play. As you progress south through the Children’s Room, our space becomes quieter, and school-aged children can find plenty of spots to do homework, curl up with a good book, or use one of our Maker Kits.

The Children’s Room is for children in grades six and under in the company of a parent or adult caregiver. Everyone is welcome to browse the collection or look for a book, but seating in the Children’s Room is limited to children and their accompanying adults only. For more information, please see our Designated Spaces policy.

Learn & Play Children's Garden

The Learn & Play garden opened in spring 2018. This space, located behind the Children’s Room, is an interactive sensory garden designed specifically for families with young children. Water play, music and art are interwoven with nature in a beautiful, colorful, organic space. Parents or adult caregivers must stay with their children while playing in this space. For more information, please see our Designated Spaces policy.
